History

Mission Nuestra Senora del Refugio (Our Lady of Refuge) was established in 1791 30 miles northeast of Refugio near the coast. It was the last Texas Mission to be founded, only 22 years after the first California Mission. It was relocated to Refugio in 1795. A stone sanctuary was built in 1868 but later demolished and in 1901 replaced with the Victorian/Romanesque that now occupies the site. A school, convent, and auditorium were added in 1946.
